Why Learn Guitar?

Music is powerful. It promotes communication, self-expression, teamwork, social interaction, and self-discipline. It is one of the only activities that exercises both hemispheres of the brain -- the creative side and the analytical side -- simultaneously. The study of music prepares our brains for learning in areas outside music. Some of the smartest students in any school can be found in the band, choir, and orchestra.

And if all that is not enough, participating in music is fun!

I believe in music’s ability to move and inspire us, to open doors through which we pass from childhood into a world of work, culture, intellectual activity, and human involvement.

To that end I teach music.

This site exists for two reasons: to help others discover and explore music; and to provide me with a source of income through teaching. I get paid to do what I love...life is good.

More Than Just Guitar Lessons

While music is often taught in a group setting, it is not always best learned in a group setting. A person’s ability to learn is as unique as a fingerprint. For that reason I teach in a one-on-one setting, building the lessons around the student. This results in a highly efficient, personalized learning system. The curriculum includes:

  1. Guitar lessons

  2. Bass lessons

  3. Ukulele lessons

  4. Music theory

  5. Ear training

  6. Reading guitar chords and standard notation

  7. Rhythmic and harmonic dictation

  8. Practice and performance techniques

  9. Improvisation

  10. Listening skills

  11. Transcription (the skill of writing music by listening to it)

The primary tool I use in teaching music is the acoustic guitar. It is simple enough to be a “quick-start” instrument, yet so complex that mastering it takes a lifetime. I teach all popular styles from rock to jazz to classical.
