What Is It About Music?
Music is powerful. It promotes communication, self-expression, teamwork, social interaction, and self-discipline. It exemplifies human cooperation, allowing us to ‘band’ together to create something larger than the sum of our separate beings. It is one of the only activities that exercises both hemispheres of the brain — the creative side and the analytical side — simultaneously. The study of music prepares our minds for learning in areas outside music. Some of the brightest students in any school can be found in the band, choir, and orchestra.
And if that’s not enough, music is fun!
I believe in music’s ability to move and inspire us, to open doors through which we pass from childhood into a world of work, culture, intellectual activity, and human involvement.
To this end I teach music.
This site exists for two reasons: 1) to help others discover and explore music; 2) to provide me with a source of income so I can concentrate on teaching. I get paid to do what I love...life is good.
More Than Guitar Lessons
While music is often taught in a group setting, it is not always best learned that way. Because a person’s ability to learn is as unique as a fingerprint I teach in a one-on-one setting, building the lessons around the student. This results in a highly efficient, personalized learning system. The curriculum includes:
-
•Guitar lessons
-
•Bass lessons
-
•Ukulele lessons
-
•Music theory
-
•Ear training
-
•Reading guitar chords, notation, and tablature.
-
•Rhythmic and harmonic dictation
-
•Practice and performance techniques
-
•Improvisation
-
•Listening skills
-
•Transcription (the skill of writing music by listening to it)
The primary tool I use in teaching music is the acoustic guitar. It is simple enough to be a “quick-start” instrument, yet so complex that mastery takes a lifetime. I teach all popular styles from rock and jazz to folk and classical.
